Saturday February 1, 2014 - BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Paterson, NJ
After MCing the Paterson Municipal Council's 2014 Black History Month Award Ceremony, I paused to pose for a photo with my Honoree, ten-year-old Jahmier Wilson, founder of Kids of Incarcerated Parents (KOIP). Jahmier is the youngest Black History Month Award recipient in our history. Young Mister Wilson started his organization at the age of seven. Since that time, with the help of his family, volunteers, and his church family, KOIP has helped numerous children of incarcerated parents with school supplies and even Christmas gifts.
Jahmier, thinking of more than just himself, serves as an inspiration to us all. This is why I nominated him for the W.E.B. Dubois Award. I salute Jahmier Wilson and the people around him who helped make his dream to serve others possible.
